History of the Flip Flop

The use of the word flip-flop for thong sandals is a modern term dating from the 1960's. Flip flops have been around for at least six thousand years. Evidence suggests early sandals were made of papyrus, straw, rawhide and other materials. The oldest surviving examples of thongs were made from papyrus leaves circa 1,500 B.C., which are on display in the British Museum. There are depictions of flip flops in ancient Egyptian murals on tombs and temples from about 4,000 B.C.

Flip Flops were originally introduced to the Hawaiian Islands by the Japanese. The traditional woven soled Japanese zōri had been used as beach wear in New Zealand in the 1930s. In the post war period in both New Zealand and America, versions were briefly popularized by servicemen returning from occupied Japan.

It would not be until the 1960s when the ubiquitous sound the wearer of this sandal made while walking would become a household name. Christened "flip-flops" in the continental United States, they also went by the name "thongs" in Australia and "slippers" in Hawaii.

Locals sandals are the original brand of rubber slippas in the Hawaiian Islands. They have been the "surfer's choice" for more than twenty years. Nearly everyone living in Hawaii has at least one pair. These economical, island style slippers are increasingly popular on the mainland as people discover it isn't necessary to spend $30+ to get a decent pair of everyday sandals. The rubber slipper is the most popular footwear of Hawaiian locals. They are affordable, comfortable, and stylish.
